This 4th game in Legacy's Emergency Room Series continues with the same mechanics and premise as the ones before it - with 50 brand new cases to challenge would-be doctors.
In Life or Death, the difficulty factor is built-in rather than being selectable by the player. You will be promoted (or demoted) depending upon how you perform. The game keeps track of your score and how many patients you have treated. You begin with the easiest cases (cuts & abrasions for instance) as a Level I Medical Student. As you advance, the cases will get more difficult until you reach Level III. At this level the conditions are the most life-threatening - strokes, heart attacks, severe trauma.
After the reception desk nurse greets you, begin your first day on the staff of Legacy Memorial Hospital's Emergency Room. Once you are signed in, you have the opportunity to take a Tutorial which will get you acquainted with how things run and what is expected of you. When you are ready, click on the clipboard by the Nurses Station to view the file folders on 3 patients waiting to be treated. The nurse will give you the rundown on each person's condition so you can select which one you wish to see first.
As you progress through the game you'll be questioning the patients, performing examinations (using thermometers, stethoscopes etc.), ordering various lab work and tests (blood work, urinalysis, x-rays, CT scans etc.) as well as analyzing the results. Part of the process is completing virtual paperwork on your patients (called S.O.A.P. in the game - Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan) and monitoring their health meter on your "Medomatic", a virtual PDA where you can read and input information about each patient.
The interface is Point and Click. Real people act out the parts in over 200 full motion video sequences. Fully searchable medical databases provide hints and clues to making the correct diagnosis for the various cases.
