Sterling's Gift takes you back in American history to a period just after the Civil War. This fictional tale takes place in the modern Neill-Cochran House (now a museum) which was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers by General George Custer and his wife, Libbie.
When the game begins, you find Libbie Custer's diary in which she writes about a "secret" gift she received for Christmas from a blind child orphaned during the war. She told no one about the present and it has remained hidden for over a century. Curious as you are, you set out to find it. During the course of the game you will search everywhere for clues, solve puzzles and eventually find the miraculous gift mentioned in the diary.
The game is played entirely by mouse in first person. The graphics are actual photographs from inside the historic home presented in slide-show fashion. There are items to collect for use and stored in an inventory, some of which need to be manipulated. There is background music and there are some ambient sounds. There are no voices.
Selectable options at the beginning of the game include historical facts, hints, and spoilers. Saved games can be named and are limitless in number.
