Magic Lanterns is the second game released by Boomzap, a small Singaporean developer of casual games. Like their first game, it is a simple casual puzzle game. It is based on a common "collapse-style" dynamic where the player clicks on groups of 2 or more lanterns of the same color, trying to build and detonate the largest sets of the same color possible.
There are also many bonus tiles. Wild Tiles automatically take the form of the colour which will remove the most tiles. Paint pots change the colour of surrounding tiles to a set colour, while Kaleidoscopes randomize them. Arrows remove a whole column or row. Crates are not removable, until they hit the ground.
The setting of the game is ancient Japan, with the main "quest mode" being a tour through Japan with a kimono-clad tour guide, Hana. Levels include various shapes and sizes, and the game also features a full community mode and editor that allows the player to make their own levels and share them with others. High scores are also stored online.
In addition, the game has a number of different play modes. Panic adds a time limit that is recharged every time the player makes a match. Puzzle mode removes all limitations, but forces the player to remove all of the lanterns without leaving any on the screen.
