Theatre of War 2: Africa 1943 is a real-time strategy game set during the World War II, more precisely during the events in North Africa. In three campaigns the player takes the role of either the American, the British or the German army and plays through overall 15 missions - some of them deal with the same battle, just from another perspective. In comparison to other strategy games this one focuses more on a realistic battle simulation, e.g. a lot of tanks are not enough to destroy a village because of the antitank defenses. Another examples are multiple damage zones with different impacts, e.g. with a a damaged tower a tank can only shoot in one direction, and a complex calculation of shots and hits.
During gameplay the player commands his troops as usual and tells them what to do. Many procedures are automated, e.g. the AI automatically shoots at enemies, which reduces the need for micro management. Of course these orders can be set by the player. A further help are the possibilities to position the units before the battle starts, to pause the game at any time or to slow it down. Between missions the player can swap units and troops (within the historical possibilities). Soldiers gain experience and medals during missions which improve their abilities and morale.
