1916: Der unbekannte Krieg is a short survival horror student game set in the trenches during World War I. Players control a German soldier shown from a first-person perspective with a single objective: locate a ladder to escape. The trenches are rendered in hazy shades of grey with lots of grain and the sounds of bombardments. The character finds out all fellow soldiers have been killed and the reason soon becomes apparent: there are raptors on the loose. The player needs to guide the character through the maze-like environment, avoiding the raptors, and look for an exit.
During the game a number of elements are introduced. There are different sections that can be visited and dead soldiers have often left behind notes. Raptors can be distracted temporarily by throwing torn off hands or feet from soldiers. Other items include a rifle with a limited amount of bullets, some flares to temporarily drive the raptors away and eventually also a gas mask needed to cross a certain section. There is no HUD and only a limited amount of damage can be taken before the game is over.
