Atlantica Online is an online RPG with one big twist: the fights are turn-based! It is a free-to-play title which means it can be downloaded and played free of charge. It finances itself by selling in-game items and licenses which are not required to beat the game. Licenses are mostly comfort functions which are limited in time, e.g. a teleportation license allows the user to teleport to already visited places for 30 days. The story is about the mighty resource Oreichalkos which brought power and ultimately doom over the legendary Atlantis. The player takes the role of an descendant of the people of Atlantis who needs to find Atlantis and save humanity from the Oreichalkos. The game starts in Eastern Asia and leads the player all over the world.
While travelling over the world the player only sees his main character, just like in any other online-RPG. But when he meets an enemy the game switches to a separate fighting screen where the two parties face each other: on one side the evil creatures and on the other one the player with his mercenaries. The number of these mercenaries is limited by the player's level and his progress in the game (up to eight) - and of course they only can be hired after solving a big side quest or giving them a lot of money.
The fights itself are turn-based: during the player's turn he has a limited time frame to choose the actions for his men. Every party member can perform one action per turn which is performed instantly. Besides the usage of the standard and a special attack the player can also use the time to optimize his tactics because the formation is of great importance. Every one of the seven classes has different advantages and disadvantages. Up to three players can start a Long Distance Party and fight together. The PvP content consists of leagues which are basically tournaments against other players.
Besides fighting the game also features a crafting and economic system. The player can create every item himself (with the correct ingredients) and sell it to other players. Guilds can take control over cities or even nations and have to take care of the commonwealth, e.g. culture or security.Another important features are there to encourage a friendly contact with other players: the mentor system allows experienced players to help new players. The mentor receives a big reward (money and experience points) when his trainee reaches level 30.
