Avatar: Escape from the Spirit World is a special online supplement to the Nickelodeon program Avatar: The Last Airbender, created to bridge the gap between seasons 2 and 3. Alternating between short semi-animated sequences and short games that are used to unlock the next story segment, Spirit World tells the player what happened to Aang after he was shot and nearly killed in the season 2 finale.
In the story, Aang must track down and reconnect with his four previous lives. Each of these is preceded by a short puzzle and then a mini-game:Aang On! - The player must sweep their mouse in the direction of the arrow on the screen. Doing so will allow Aang to complete a bending move that will protect him from the objects being hurled at him.
4 Nations Tournament - Players can pick one of four characters and compete as their nation (Air, Fire, Water, Earth) in a handball game where they must throw the ball into the opposing goal. In the midst of game they can summon their bending powers as offensive weapons.
Treetop Trouble - Sokka must warn a village of an impending attack in this platform game that has him jumping through trees and dodging projectiles, all while outrunning the clock.
Ashes in the Air - A village is on fire, and Katara and Aang must work together to stop it. The player directs Aang around a grid, moving him such that he can use his airbending powers to blow flames toward Katara, so she can douse them with her waterbending powers. The path for the flames is not always straightforward, creating puzzles that Aang must solve by moving the flames around and setting other things on fire. After playing each mini-game, the player is asked a trivia question about the show, then asked to enter a special code. These codes were originally distributed on television (and online) over four weeks and are necessary for unlocking the online comic and continuing the game. The codes can be viewed on the Nickelodeon website.
Completing all four chapters unlocks an exclusive Escape from the Spirit World game. All of the other games are also available on Nick.com separate from Spirit World.
