Birds On A Wire is a color matching game with small cartoon birds. The player controls a stationary cannon at the bottom of the screen, loaded with a bird and showing the next one on a small round window. The objective is to shoot the birds towards other fowl of the same color, matching three or more to make them explode and disappear in a cloud of feathers. Most of the screen is occupied by a long piece of wire, twisting form the top to the bottom towards the gaping mouth of a statue. A line of multicolored birds keeps marching on the wire, and if several fall inside the hole the game is over.
Golden coins appear around the gamefield, and can be collected by hitting them with a bird. After shooting 20 coins, the player receives an extra life. The birds can bounce from the surrounding walls, and their elasticity can be used as a strategy to hit obscured places on the line. Some of the animals have an icon of a power-up, activated once they are matched. The powers are the standard ones from the genre, they stop the birds for a few seconds, make them move backwards, slow their movement, create a targeting line for the cannon, eliminate all birds of one specific color and perform other similar helpful actions.
The game has three modes. In adventure mode, the player moves from levels with different background scenes and challenges. In action mode, the goal of each level is to destroy a set amount of birds as fast as possible. In arcade mode, the birds move downwards and the goal is to clear the screen of them.
