BitStream is a retro-style minimalist racing game that draws a heavy influence from Dotstream. The player controls a colored line which races against seven other colored lines. Moving straight and "drafting" next to other lines will increase speed, as will hitting boost pads strewn about each course; turning up and down the course, as well as hitting obstacles, will decrease speed. However, unlike Dotstream, hitting obstacles will not end the race prematurely.
There are four tournaments of four races each, as well as a single race mode, a "freestyle" mode where all eight lines can be controlled in time with the music, and a "swarm" mode where the player controls two lines simultaneously and must keep them going at the same pace. Up to eight players can race simultaneously.
