Maria Lopez is a young woman that just got married to David Fox, a military official. After returning from a tropical honeymoon, their happiness is suddenly interrupted when David is called to duty, leading to an argument between the lovers and the soldier leaving in anger. Soon, she receives terrible news about her husband, and to recover from the grief she starts to remember all the good moments from the past.
Broken Hearts: A Soldier's Duty is a hidden object game with adventure elements. Instead of the usual list of objects at the bottom of the screen, the goal is to find and click on a number of items belonging to certain categories, like drinks, animals, fruits, and so on. Like in some game shows, the name of each entry remains hidden until the object is found and collected. Each collected object gives a number of hearts, that are necessary to complete a level and can be used as currency to buy card games and pay for hints. In some instances, the goal is to accomplish a series of tasks by dragging and dropping scenery objects on top of each other, like dragging a light match to a pile of logs to start a fire.
The hint system is extensive and progressive, with each succeeding clue being more explicit than the last one. The outline hint shows the silhouette of the object, the name hint displays the name of an item and the location hint highlights the position of one of the list entries. After using a hint, all the hint options stay frozen for a few moments. The card games are implementations of five solitaire variations: Klondike, Prisoners, FreeCell, Golf and Pyramid. After being purchased, they can be played at any time to earn more hearts.
