The Cleaner is a freeware sidescrolling action game scripted with the Game Maker engine. It takes place in a fantasy universe where magic and futuristic technology coexist. The story centers around a people highly skilled in the ways of magic which uses their powers to open up dimension-portals and explore worlds separated from theirs. Unfortunately for them evil shadowy creatures from another dimension also uses these portals to send over their minions to the mages realm with the intent of enslaving it. You play a young mage titled The Cleaner whose task it will be to travel to various worlds through the portals in order to fight back the invading forces threatening your home-world.
The gameplay consists of moving through various levels whose environments ranges from lush green meadows to snow-covered arctic plains and battle a wide variety of enemies such as acid-spitting seaslugs and heavily armed gunships as well as solving some puzzles. You will be able to fly and shoot in any direction on the screen by using mouse and keyboard simultaneously. An arsenal of magic spells powered by mana is your main means of defense but you can also use telekinesis to remotely grab and move lose objects with the mouse and use these as blunt weapons. Telekinesis will also be required to solve most of the puzzles in the game.
There is also some elements of roleplaying which consists of collecting coloured orbs named essence points and spend these to improve the efficiency of your spells as well as four different stats which improves flying speed, the rate at which mana regenerates and the maximum amount of manapoints and hitpoints respectively. You can also find pieces of shattered relics at various points in the game to collect and each relic completed will give you a new power, such as the ability to project a light-beam from your hand to make targeting easier. In between certain levels you will get to watch animated cutscenes which serves to move the plot forward.
All of these cutscenes, save for the intro detailing the background story, are virtually devoid of any dialogues or written text and relies solely on the visual outputs to advance the story.
