The freeware game Combat Engineer is basically a remake of Minesweeper, but with some things of its own.
The playfield consists of 33x19 cells and one bomb in each corner. The primary goal of the game is to defuse those bombs before your time runs out. This is simply done by clicking on the corner cells, however, unlike Minesweeper, you can't just click any cells, but only adjacent ones to already opened ones (you start with 3x3 opened ones in the center). So you have to make your way to all four corners.
Like Minesweeper, each cell contains a number from 0 (blank) to 7, telling how many mines are in adjacent cells. So you have to think which ones you simply open and which ones you mark as a mine. If you trigger one or two mines, the game does not end, because you are a bit protected, however the third mine will kill you.
The game comes with 4 difficulty settings (Easy, Medium, Hard, Very Hard), which impact on how dense the minefield will be.
