You're collecting clues with CSI tools and you're analysing it in the lab or let Greg Sanders to do it in the first two games. You can also ask questions to Doc, the coronary or search/interrogating/arrest warrants to Brass when you have enough evidences against one of the witnesses/suspects. You're also taking part to their interrogation.

The main objective is to reach the highest rank by finding all the clues, asking all the questions and by never using the hint system consisting in asking help to your team member. By doing it, you will unlock bonuses. In Hard Evidence, you also have a challenge about thoroughness points (areas without evidence) and insects (find the five insects in each case for making Grissom happy). [source:mobygames]
