Data Jammers: FastForward is a fast-paced action game where the player controls D.O.O.D. (Digital Operative, Optical Data), a type of virtual commando known as a Data Jammer, who infiltrates the virtual vaults of the Ourboros. The players controls a craft tied to a virtual bitstream, similar to a race track, that hovers in the air, swerves in all directions and is often split up in different parts with tilted sections. The goal is to complete three chapters with different missions by reaching the end section without being destroyed. The final mission of each chapter also has a boss.
The vehicle is controlled through four movement keys to move left and right, but also up and down the bitstream. The stream is filled with harmless green data packets that do not damage the craft, but still act as obstacles. More dangerous are various types of enemies that attempt to crash into the player's ship to deplete the shield. A limited amount of smart bombs is available to take care of them, but more often the player needs to use obstacles and gaps to lure the enemies into a trap or divert them into a different path. The racetrack-like bitstream is divided into different lanes. Some of them have colours, such as green ones to collect data or power-ups (a strong shield, full shield restoration etc.) or red ones with obstacles. A mix of both is orange. Certain enemies chase the player, while others are stationary. When the shield is depleted, the mission needs to be restarted.
