In Death vs. Monstars you control a shooting skull that fights massive amounts of enemies. Divided into ten levels, the main objective of each level is to stay alive until you kill a certain amount of enemies or until a period of time passes.
The brief story of the game tells about a giant black square that threatens the world, and Death is the only one that can stop him, and so he journeys to the sky to defeat hoards of minions and ultimately the mysterious boss.
The game is mostly controlled with the mouse. The unique aiming system in the game is that the crosshair constantly drags after the player's character, making aiming a bit tricky at first. Instead of just pointing to the direction you want to shoot at, you need to drag the crosshair so it faces the right direction. In addition to the basic shooting, double-clicking the mouse will cause a "Berserk Time" attack, which shoots in all directions for a brief period of time, and also converts some of the shots of the enemies that are flying towards you into money. The last means of protection in your disposal is Bullet Time which activates for a limited amount of time when you hold the Space Bar.
Money must be collected in order to purchase better weapons and upgrades. The four upgrades are increasing your max health, shorter healing time, longer Berserk Time and faster Berserk charge. You will find yourself playing earlier levels in order to raise enough money to buy the upgrades and surviving later levels.
