Angela, a Hollywood-based detective, is hired by one of the movie studios to investigate the disappearance of a famous actress, along with 10 million dollars and the only copy of an unreleased film.
Detective Stories: Hollywood is a hidden object game with adventure elements. The game takes place on various locations of Hollywood, represented as a series of static screens. Each location is revisited several times with variations of gameplay. Initially, the objective is to find and click on pieces of objects, scattered around the scenery, that are assembled at the inventory at the right side of the screen. The inventory shows pictures of the objects with the number of pieces remaining to be found. When the object is fully reconstructed it can be dragged and dropped in the scenery to solve one of the puzzles.
After solving the first part, another gameplay variation comes up. Usually, is the normal hidden object type where a list of objects have to be found on the scenery within a time limit. Sometimes the list of names is replaced by the objects silhouettes. Other variations include one where the screen is split in two similar images and the player has to click on the differences, and one where the objects have to be dragged and dropped from the inventory to their silhouettes.
At the end of each chapter, a mini-game appears that usually is an implementation of a classic puzzle like concentration, jigsaw puzzles and similar games. Some are unique and related to the location.
