A diabolikal legion of infernal imps are invading a 12x12 grid gameboard in staggered waves. The player is in charge of repelling their odious presence with little defending homonculi, bombs, rockets etc. with different unit-particular chess-like areas of effect -- some forward, some both forward and backward, some in a one-block diagonal radius, etc.
The kicker is that the player only gets to activate two of them in a given round, after which the sinister opponent strews more demons across the board, some of which (in later levels) require multiple wounds to be vanquished. To get around this imbalance, the player has to arrange their troops in such a fashion that they trigger each other, like a run of dominoes or a Rube Goldberg machine.
Though this game lacks the bonus unit types enjoyed by its polished sequel, it does boast an additional, Archon-like complicating factor missing there -- randomly raised blocks emerging from and retreating to the uncertain gameboard every turn, temporarily sheltering pesky demons from the player's cleansing cannonballs.
