In Downland, the object is to locate keys which unlock doors as you navigate underground caverns by climbing ropes. Difficulty is increased by falling acid, Indiana Jones meets Donkey Kong style runaway boulders and a time limit upon which expiration means death by a flying bat. Backtracking is required which some perceived as tedious while others saw a logical expansion upon the relatively limited amount of ten caverns. Upon completion of the ten caverns, the player starts over at the beginning at a more difficult level, where the acid drops are closer to the ropes, requiring one to "hang" off the opposite edge to avoid being hit by them.
