Privateer is the second commercial expansion to the naval strategy title East India Company and requires the original game to play. It includes two new campaigns where the player takes on the role of a privateer for one of the nations. In a limited time frame players need to accumulate wealth as quickly as possible and form alliances when needed. Contrary to the previous campaigns, it is much more mission-driven, with a variety of quests including hunting down ships with diplomatic messengers, smuggling and blocking ports strategically.

Also included are two new multiplayer modes: Breakthrough and Beehive. There are more than ten new skills, including False Colors, Infiltrate and Smuggle and a host of new specialist characters such as surgeons, cooks, constables and marine officers, with the ability to influence the abilities of the fleet.
