El Grande is the official Windows translation of the complex eponymous board game. The setting is Spain of the 15th century. The basic rules: Spain is divided into several districts. To gain power in a district the players have to send caballeros into it. The most important character is the king because the district he has occupied is taboo for all other players.

There are two kind of cards: power cards and action cards. The action cards represent one exact move and are divided into five piles; four of them involve a special number of caballeros (1-4) and the fifth is about the king. Every round one action card of each pile gets revealed. Then each player uses one of his power cards. The player who played the card with the biggest worth, chooses one of the five action cards, then the one with the second highest worth, and so on. Every chosen card is then taken out of the game. After every round the players receive winning points depending on their moves and overall state. After nine rounds the player with the most points wins.

This game offers the usual improvements to board games: enhanced graphics, automatic winning point calculations, a tutorial and customizable AI opponents. There is also a replay function to analyze matches. [source:mobygames]
