Escape the House is a brief first-person adventure game in which the player is trapped inside of a house, having presumably been kidnapped, and must escape in order to find their way back home.
The majority of the game involves exploring the house in order to find a set of keys that, together, will unlock the front door. These keys are hidden throughout the house and the player must pixel-hunt the many rooms in the house in order to find them. Besides keys, the only other items that players can carry with them are sandwiches, which similarly serve a puzzle solving purpose. In addition to searching for and using items, the only other type of obstacle to the player comes in the form of a riddle that prevents the player from progressing after they have escaped the house.
Aesthetically, the game is played almost exclusively in black and white while the player is trapped in the house; the game only introduces color once the player has escaped. The game also contains a musical score, with each section of the game being accompanied by its own unique instrumental acoustic guitar piece played by the game's creator.
The game features a save game function although it is impossible to die or render the game unwinnable.
