Fairway Solitaire is a card game with a golf theme. You are shown a group of cards dealt on the screen. At the bottom is a face down deck and one card turned face up. What you must do is, using your mouse, click a card that is one next card higher or lower than the face up card, irregardless of suit. So, if the face up card is a Jack, you can click a ten or Queen. If your card is an Ace, you can click a two or a King. If there are no cards for you to use, click the face down deck to turn over the top card and, hopefully, get something you can use. If you click six or more cards in a row, that is a long drive and it increases your multiplier.
Later in the game, you will have sand trap cards. These are untouchable until you find the sand wedge card. Once the sand wedge is found, the sand trap's bottom card will flip over and be like any other card. You will also have water hazard cards. These block you from getting to a column of cards and must be cleared to access that column. They are cleared like other cards. You will sometimes find iron cards. These are golf irons (clubs) that are stored in your golf bag. They will have a number from two to nine and can be used to replace the face up card, if needed. You will also find wild shot cards. If you find one of these, you can drop the shot for a two card penalty or play the shot. If you play the shot, a window with flickering images will appear. Click the stop button to take what comes up, good or bad.
During the game, you are earning money. You need the money to unlock the next course but also to buy things in the golf shop. Things you can buy are like a shirt/blouse that gives an extra mulligan (ability to undo you last action) on each hole or x-ray sunglasses that let you see the next card in the face down desk.
