Football Manager Live is a online-only managerial soccer simulation where the player is responsible for the financial and athletic success of his club. The main difference to regular games of this genre is that the players don't manage an existing club but create their own. The next important step is to choose the association which represents how much time the player wants to invest in the game, a weekend association for example just plays on the weekend and professional leagues impose a (of course just virtual) fine when a player doesn't show up to matches. Every new club, however, has the same budget for transfer and salary which he uses to choose his players from the database with 330.000 athletes - of course every one can only be employed once per server. This process also can be delegated to the AI.
There is no tight schedule for matches, just a date when it has to be done. This means the player can freely challenge other players for championship or exhibition matches. If one or both players are not online at the time the AI steps in and the players can watch the game later. The matches itself don't use the new 3D engine from Football Manager 2009 but the old 2D presentation with white and red dots which represent the players.
Of course there are a lot of settings the player can influence his team with, especially regarding tactics and training. But unlike the main series the player also has full responsibility over the financial aspects, e.g. building a new stadium. But every setting has to be unlocked first. Every manager can learn one new respectively a better level of an ability at the time and than has to wait a certain time until he can use it, e.g. free kick instructions in 15 hours. This is in real-time, this means the player also learns when he is offline.
