Gatling Gears is a twin-stick shooter that takes place in Greed Corp's Mistbound universe. The game places the player in the shoes of Max Brawley, a walker pilot veteran who worked for the Empire, but switches sides to join the Freemen when the Empire goes to far in their quest for raw resources.
The game features a campaign consisting of five chapters, each consisting of five levels and a boss fight. In each of the levels the player controls Max Brawley and his two legged walking tank. Like most similar top-down shooters, the player controls the protagonist using the thumb sticks on the controller, using the one for walking and the other to direct the walker's Gatling gun with infinite ammo. Max Brawley also has two other weapons available to him, grenades and missiles. They are activated using the trigger buttons on the gamepad and are only available in limited supply; although they do automatically refill over time. On the PC the player can also use mouse and keyboard to control the protagonist.
The levels feature linear paths which the player must follow. The camera scrolls along with the player and prevents the player from going back. On his path Max will encounter many enemies which need to be destroyed and who will try to destroy the player. They include infantry, rocketeers, tanks, walkers, train carts, flying vehicles and huge level bosses. Buildings and trees can also be destroyed. At time the camera will stay at a fixed location while the player must kill all enemies in the screen and all following reinforcement before proceeding.
Aside from the default weapon arsenal there are also various power-ups that the player can collect, such as the screen cleaner, health packs and temporary boosts for walker's weapons. The player can also permanently upgrade weapons and armor by collecting gold bars which can be used in stores to buy and sell upgrades.
For each level the player can try to attain a certain high-score. This is done by collecting gears, which are dropped by vanquished enemies. Killing enemies without losing health causes a multiplier for these gears to increase, allowing for higher scores.
The entire campaign can be played in two player cooperative mode. Because scores are kept separately, in this mode players can also try to play more competitively.
Aside from the campaign there's also a Survival Mode with unique maps in which the goal is to survive as long as possible by defeating wave after wave of enemies. In these arena's the player(s) must also defend vital buildings that the enemies are out to destroy.
