Give Up Robot 2 is the sequel to Give Up, Robot and retains the core game mechanics. It is a twitchy platformer starring a robot that is woken up in a corrupted testing environment. He needs to complete several small levels by reaching the right side of the screen. The robot can be moved around and jump. Holding the button for a longer time results in a higher jump. A quick tap provides a low hop. The main game mechanic is a grappling hook. The robot can fire it off to grapple to specific surfaces. Once attached, he can swing left or right to gain speed and move up or down to decrease or increase the grapple length. There is an unlimited amount of retries and the grappling hook can be fired off quickly in succession, even though it only has a limited range and always extends itself in an angle of about 45 degrees left or right (depending on the direction the robot is looking).
The scenery moves away from the surreal environments to a look that draws inspiration from the Super Mario Bros. games. Some levels are still dark, but of them are now a lot brighter. There are smiling clouds and rockets with speech balloons, the robot can collect coins and there are blocks that can be hit multiple times to release additional coins. Just like the original game there are narrow passages, large gaps, temporary blocks, moving platforms and explosive surfaces. Generally more precise timing is required to progress now and certain levels require a quick succession of grappling to avoid hazards. New challenges include rockets you can attach yourself to, to change their direction and blow up obstacles. Clouds can be lowered to temporarily open passages and there are also laser beams. In certain levels the robot needs to complete a sequence of grapples shown through numbers, in the correct order. Another addition is the jet pack. Once discovered the robot can use it three times to launch himself into the air for a short burst. It often needs to be used in combination with regular grappling.
After completing the main game a new, harder mode is unlocked.
