Mashing-up a couple of genres and concepts, this game puts the player in control of one of Zork's notorious grues, monsters of pure darkness who love nothing more than gobbling up under-illuminated dungeon adventurers. Rather than presenting the environment in the Infocom text-adventure style, the player instead navigates a roguelike dungeon, with the screen indicating the general layout of walls and staircases encountered by the player so far as well as line-of-sight revelation of what the grue can perceive... and the hateful, hurtful area of illumination accompanying prudent spelunkers and adventurers, blazing before them like a lighthouse beam. Getting caught in the light will kill our grue, whose only initial opportunity (before one is able to cast light-dampening spells) to eat adventurers is to lurk in under-lit alcoves and hope that they stumble into the gaping jaws. The goal of the game, however, is not to eat adventurers but to traverse 20 levels of the dungeon, aiming to emerge from the top and evaluate myths of a fabulous world drenched half the time in burning light.
