Infantry is an online-only multiplayer action game with a science fiction theme. Players can spectate or join one of multiple game types running simultaneously, and communicate through an in-game chat window. Game types are generally team based, and include marines vs aliens, capture the flag, and various sports themes, including football, hockey, and futuristic "Gravball." All games run off the same game engine.
Infantry was originally released by Brainscan Interactive for play on their EnterNET Global Network. It was picked up in October 2000 by Sony Online Entertainment and included in their "The Station" games lineup. On May 1, 2002, Sony moved Infantry out of "live beta" and into its Station Pass lineup, which required a monthly fee of $6.95 USD.
On June 26, 2007, SOE shifted Infantry to completely free to play for anyone with a free Sony Station account. At this time, the editing tools were also released for public download. Players can create their own levels and gametypes and submit them to SOE, where they are rotated during a monthly public testing period.
