The Junkyard is a stacking game where the player uses a construction crane to lift up cars, buses, trucks, and even motorcycles and air condition units, stacking them, meeting a weight quota in the allotted time. Afterwards, once the player has met their weight quota, they are taken to another screen for the compactor to crush their stack. Points are awarded based on how much weight is put on the scale, how neat the stack is and how small it is after being compacted.
Gameplay is relatively simple, the player does not control the crane as it swings side to side, clicking the mouse button once their crane is positioned over a desired item, it is more based on timing and skill. Also, when the player is taken to the compacter to drop their item, the crane will move side to side and up and down in a jerky manner, once again clicking the mouse to release their item, relying on more timing and skill. If an item is not directly on top of another, it will bounce off and not be counted towards the weight. Likewise, when they reach the compacter to smash their stack, a power bar will appear on the screen, pressing the "space" button on the keyboard or clicking the mouse will stop the meter at the desired location.
As the levels progress, more time will be added, but more weight will be added as well. The junkyard will be full of plenty of items to be stacked, each with their own individual weight (i.e., small cars will weigh less compared to buses and trucks), but there are also rocks strewn about which will slow down the crane if they are accidentally picked up.
Likewise, there are four power-ups scattered throughout various levels. There is a treasure box labeled with a "?", this will either speed the crane up when picking up larger objects, like big rocks and buses or another function could be to add time. There are also a gem and a bar of gold scattered around, picking this up will add weight to the players stack total.
