The character used to spell the title of this game means destruction. Indeed, destruction is part of young Vossgen's life. His father was a brave knight, but he couldn't protect his wife and his child, who was taken to the demonic world of Weltschmerz, raised as a demon, and finally turned into a demon himself. On a quest to find his lost family and the traitor who had caused their separation, Vossgen gets killed. But even as a spirit in the world of the dead, he continues to fight, and finally is resurrected. It's time to visit the big world, to find friends, and to fulfill the wish of his deceased father...
Ki is a Japanese-style top-down RPG with turn-based combat. There are no visible enemies, and the battles are random most of the time, even though encounter rate is low, and in some points the enemy appearance is pre-set. The game follows the traditional procedures of visiting towns to buy equipment (magic spells are also bought in shops), and completing dungeon areas to advance the story. Different characters will join Vossgen on his quest (up to three companions at a time). The battle commands are more complex than usually in Japanese RPGs, having three types of attack - close, normal, and far; close attacks deal more damage, but expose the character more, etc. This applies to physical attacks, magical spells (elemental disciplines), as well as special technique. There are also a few instances when the player is able to make moral choices, which will change Vossgen's karma, and possibly influence the ending.
