Lucky Luke: Outlaws is a first-person side-scrolling shooter based on the famous comics series about the poor lonesome cowboy who can draw a gun faster than his shadow: Lucky Luke. The Dalton brothers have escaped from their prison, along with numerous bandits, and Lucky Luke suspects they are involved with the missing gold of an Austin-bound train. After discovering the convoy, they also kidnap the bank's daughter.
The game is started with a number of life points according to one of three difficulty levels, and a colt with a limited number of bullets. The cowboy has to disarm his opponents by moving a cross-hair shaped cursor over the screen and firing at right time. Four flashing arrows indicate the direction find the opponents. If it takes to long, a timer is started and when the countdown is complete, Lucky Luke loses a life.
When you beat an opponent, Lucky Luke sometimes recovers money or additional bullets, along with points added to the score. When you do not have enough time to find your opponent, you can press a key to make Lucky Luke dodge the incoming shot. If you succeed, you must find the shooter to disarm him and attack the next opponent. Some enemies also have hostages you cannot fire at. The five levels hold bonuses hidden in the scenery. Next to cash and bullets, these include stars (life points) and horseshoes (+2 seconds to protect yourself). At the end of the final stage, you are up against the Dalton brothers.
