An apprentice magician must lift the evil spell that haunts a cursed valley, using the spells found in the handbook.

The Magician's Handbook: Cursed Valley is a hidden object game with a sorcery theme and hand-painted backgrounds. The game has thirteen chapters, each with several locations to explore. The main objective is to find and click with a wand-shaped cursor on all the items from a list at the left side of the screen, on places filled with assorted paraphernalia within a time limit.

A crystal ball sitting below the list shows the two available spells. The Reveal Spell serves as the hint system, stored as a series of eye icons on the ball. When clicked, the icon disappear and shows the exact position of one of the required objects. The Repel Spell removes distractions from the screen, like flying books and spiders, and illuminates darkened rooms. It takes some time to recharge after use.

Two mini-games appear between chapters. In the potion mixing game, the screen shows a grid with ingredient tiles, and the goal is to keep connecting three or more tiles horizontally, vertically or diagonally until the potion jar is full. In the magical chant game, the screen shows word parts of varying color, size and font that keep moving around, and the goal is to spell the chant at the bottom scroll with a limited number of them.

The player's performance is graded at the end of each chapter. Finding items fast and not relying on spells give better grades, increasing the number of hints available at the start of the next chapter. [source:mobygames]
