The Moonkeeper is a platformer with a distinctive retro-style, in sound (no music except for the intro and the end sequence) as well as the limited, faded colour palette with pixel art and screen flickers that resemble a movie projector. The story continues the historical style, as the game is set in 2000 A.D. when the moon base is said to be infested with aliens. The players is sent in to destroy the five gestation pods (hives) where the aliens spawn from. Enemies include human-like characters, crabs and small bugs. During the game a second weapon can be located, a demolition gun, that is able to crush specific types of blocks. The third type of weapon is a limited amount of grenades (deca-bombs). The character can be hit three times before dying and health packs restore the life bar.
The player commands the astronaut in search of the pods. He is able to move around, jump, shoot with a basic laser gun and interact with the environment by pushing around boxes. The gameplay is non-linear and the environment can be explored in different directions to locate and destroy the pods in any order. Obstacles in the environment also include moving platforms, electrical lasers, spikes, lava, turrets and doors that are only unlocked after locating a key. Checkpoints can be activated at regular intervals.
