In 1799, a gigantic diamond set on the forehead of an Indian statue was stolen and brought to England by Herncastle, a British officer. After the end of this colonial siege, he returns to the United Kingdom and fifty years later leaves the precious jewel as an inheritance gift to his niece Rachel, who receives it as her 18th birthday present. The gem is stolen once again, this time from the family manor, and the famous detective Sergeant Cuff is summoned to investigate its disappearance and interview all the house guests and other tenants to find the culprit.
Mystery Masterpiece: The Moonstone is a hidden object game with a mystery theme, based on the classic 1868 crime novel by Wilkie Collins. The objective is to investigate nine suspects, each with four locations represented by static screens showing places and rooms related to the case. Each location has a list of objects displayed at the left side of the screen, and the goal is to search and click on all the required items. Some of the objects are stored in the inventory, to be used later to solve puzzles. The list and inventory can switch places by clicking on their respective buttons at the bottom, labeled "clues" and "tools".
Some of the list entries can only be collected after using one of the stored objects to complete a puzzle. Clicking on certain sections of the scenery brings up an interactive window showing a zoomed view of the scene, where one of the inventory tools can be used directly to reveal a case clue. Often the required tools are found on other locations, forcing the player to go back an forth between them, collecting all the necessary objects to complete a suspect investigation. The hint button shows the position of one of the required items, but takes some time to recharge after use.
