Mystery of Time and Space is a point-and-click adventure game made with Adobe Flash and playable only online from the game's website. The object of the game is to figure out how to leave each room (or group of rooms) using items found nearby. The game is divided into "levels". When the game was first created in 2001, it consisted of only one level. As of this writing, there are 20 levels.
The game begins in a small bedroom with simple furniture and a locked door. By careful examination of the room, you eventually find the way to unlock the door and move on to Level 2. Each level becomes progressively more elaborate and difficult with adjoining rooms and many more items to find. There are original puzzles to solve of various types, some of which are particularly mind-bending.
Your inventory appears at the top of the screen at all times. Objects in inventory can be manipulated somewhat by using one on another. There is motion in the game (furniture moves, doors swing open, etc.) You play in first person, and there are no other characters and no voices. As actions are taken, comical text comments appear on-screen and can sometimes contain clues.
The game screen is set in a window as default, but this can be changed to full screen in the options. Graphics are simple line drawings in vibrant colors. Cheerful MIDI music plays in the background, and there are sound effects. Both of these can be turned on or off. The option menu remains closed until you click on a graphic at the top right of the screen. Other options exist to adjust graphics quality, reposition where the text appears and more. The in-game chat feature allows you to communicate with others also playing the game.
Your place is saved automatically in its own system cache when you exit, so clicking on "Continue" returns you to the beginning of the level you were working on when you left. The time you have spent playing is also recorded.
The game has been translated into over 20 languages.
