Need for Speed: Nitro-X is a downloadable title found on the Nintendo DSi's DSiWare store.
Nitro-X is largely a revamped, downloadable version of the previously released Nintendo DS version of Need for Speed Nitro. The game features the typical arcade-style racing found in the Need for Speed series, as well as being pursued by police. Steering the car is controlled using the stylus on the touch-screen on a steering wheel pictured therein. The touch-screen also includes a map of the current race track.
The title features eighteen "supercars" from the likes of Lamborghini, Pagani, and Porsche. Gamers can also take charge of six other vehicles such as the Hummer H2 in the new Super Pursuit mode where players take the role of the pursuing cops. Racing or pursuing take place across sixteen tracks, which can be essentially doubled when raced in reverse.
Other features in the game include three "tiers" to the gameplay, a camera mode using the built-in DSi camera, the ability to win awards, and multiplayer for up to four people in local mode. A new racing mechanic called Heroic Racing makes its debut which, with carefully timed button presses, cutscenes are activated that provide dodge moves away from police or various kinds of "attacks" on opponents. Heroic Racing is activated with an on-screen meter that gives players notice that an actionable event is forthcoming.
Players can score bonus points during races by "tagging" the surrounding environment (such as with graffiti) by collecting two floating icons that appear over each track. The tagging occurs automatically once the icons are collected.
