Kiera Vale is searching for details about her birth mother. The investigation leads her to the abandoned Blackwater Asylum, after receiving a letter by a mysterious man telling that her true family built and owned the institution, and that she was the sole inheritor of the ruined place. As she begins to explore the deserted grounds of the asylum, several clues and other bits of information start to reveal a dark conspiracy, with witchcraft connections and herself as the main target.
Nightmare Adventures: The Witch's Prison is a standard point-and-click adventure with simple puzzles made for the casual audience, where the main objective is to gather all the items found on the many locations available, and use them to solve puzzles and complete other tasks. The objects are stored inside slots at the bottom inventory, as a tray that slides upwards when selected, automatically receding down when not in use to show more of the background graphics. The inventory tools have to be dragged and dropped from their slots to an interactive portion of the scenery to perform an action or complete a pending objective.
The hint button highlights objects and places required to complete a puzzle when activated, but takes some time to recharge after use. The photo button shows all the pictures taken of certain clues, displaying images of notes and other scattered pieces shown on the small screen of a digital camera at the bottom-right corner, always accessible as a way to avoid tedious backtracking and manual notation.
Some of the puzzles take place on separate screens, where a mechanism of some sort has to be manipulated directly to reassemble torn pieces of lottery tickets, move tokens over the lines of a hexagram to position each one on tips of their color, set a series of gears on a clockwork array, play a hidden object game on a computer and complete other similar challenges.
