Nous is a single-screen arena shooter that offers fast-paced gameplay as well as interaction with a computer programme called Nous that seeks its identity and purpose. Somewhat like System Shock's SHODAN or Portal's GLaDOS, the computer constantly communicates and interferes with the player's craft during gameplay. In its search for its identity, Nous will recompile itself several times, based on the player's choices, and offers itself as an improved version. This influence can be exercised through multiple-choice answers during conversations, but the way gameplay is approached also affects it. Players can burst into opponents to create combos, or take a completely different approach to suck and draw them to a sphere similar to the gates in Geometry Wars' Pacifist game mode. That way foes are converted into friends and they provide health. When annoyed, the computer programme launches different kinds of tricks to test the player, including fake crashes, distorted screens, unlimited points, forced Game Overs, and it even projects another active window from the player's computer behind the gameplay.
