Old School Racer is a physics-based racing platform game much like the popular Trials series or Elasto Mania. While the primary goal of each stage is to reach the end as quickly as possible, there is also incentive to stop and explore, with many hidden paths and shortcuts through each course, and many hidden tokens to find. These tokens can be used to unlock more powerful bikes, which helps the player improve their best times and collect previously-unreachable tokens.
The player's bike can move forward and backward, brake, and even boost for a short period. If the player crashes or overuses the boost, their bike will explode and they will be sent back a short distance in the stage, but there is otherwise no real penalty for crashing. There are more than a dozen bikes to unlock and more than twenty courses of varying difficulty, even including "wacky" courses and challenge stages. The game will track the player's best times on each course, and there are also par times to beat.
