Miranda is a writer suffering from an exasperating lack of fresh ideas. While struggling for inspiration, she receives a mysterious package in the mail containing a book about origami. Following the instructions, she's able to fold a bird with multi-colored sheets of paper that, to her astonishment, becomes a real animal and flies towards her bedroom's mirror. Intrigued, she follows the creature into the looking glass, entering a portal to a parallel dimension with a strange and bizarre world where inanimate objects can talk. She befriends a teddy bear named Jovie, and starts on a quest to reunite two separated brothers by traveling back and forth between the two realities.
The Otherside: Realm of Eons is a hidden object game with elements of the adventure genre. As Miranda, the main task is to gather all the objects listed at the bottom of the screen on locations cluttered with assorted items. Certain portions of the scene can be clicked to show a zoom view window with another angle of location, often containing puzzles, objects and characters. The bottom interface has a bar with two sections, separated at the center by two circular slots. The pictures or names of the required objects are listed on these sections, and all of them have to be collected from the scenery to be combined into a new inventory tool in one of the slots. The inventory objects are employed as in most point-and-click adventures, by dragging and dropping them on appropriate and logical places to perform actions or complete tasks.
The hint button is a clock at the bottom-right that shows the position of one of the required items, but takes some time to recharge after use. The occasional mini-games appear on a separate screen, where the player must manipulate pieces and other interactive parts to solve a tangram puzzle, reassemble a shredded note, find pairs in a pile of photos, adjust the direction of tracks to create a path to a cart, click on the differences between two similar images and complete other challenges.
