Real Detectives: Murder in Miami is a hidden object game with adventure elements clearly inspired by popular TV series about crime and forensic experts. The game is played from the point-of-view of a team of police investigators trying to solve several murders in Miami, sometimes with cases overlapping each other. Instead of searching for all the items from a list, the objective is to photograph and collect evidence on several crime scenes and related locations. The interface at the bottom has three tabs to store evidence items, tools and suspects profiles.
Each new evidence found on the scenery receives a marker, with some being stored to be used later when interrogating suspects. Evidence with green markers have to be collected using one of the forensic tools, that can be dragged and dropped from their tab slots to a specific portion of the screen to perform several common procedures, like using a thermometer to measure temperature, dipping a cotton swab to collect blood and other liquids for analysis, dusting surfaces with a brush to reveal fingerprints, and other actions. The interrogation interface is very straightforward, where the pieces of evidence have to be dropped on a slot to elicit comments by the suspect.
A zoom window showing another angle of the scene appears after clicking on certain hotspots, sometimes containing mini-games where the player has to find several items listed on the notepad at the bottom-left corner, click on matching pairs of cereal, light all the button from an elevator panel, reassemble shredded notes or picture puzzles, and complete other similar tasks. The hint button shows the position of one of the required items, but takes some time to recharge after use.
