Rocketbirds: Revolution! is a Flash-based puzzle platformer taking cues from classic titles such as Flashback and the Oddworld series. The game was made by three people and is set in Albatropolis, a militaristic republic ruled by the penguin Il Putzki. Players control an albatross soldier referred to as Hardboiled who infiltrates the country, but runs out of rocket fuel for his jet pack and crashes into a silo far away from the hideout of the leader he wants to take out. With the help of the underground resistance he has to make his way through different settings to reach the leader.
Players control the character through the keyboard, with keys to move around, duck, jump, take aim, fire and do actions such as picking up items or activating switches. Levels consist of different areas that do not scroll but are accessed when moving towards the side of the screen. The general atmosphere and movement is very reminiscent of Flashback, with platform puzzles, key cards that need to be retrieved and levels divided into different layers. It is also possible to hide from enemies in certain dark passages. In later levels the soldier can use brain bugs that exercise mind control. By throwing them in the vicinity of another character, he can then control their body, walk around freely or engage the enemy. This technique is used extensively to solve complex puzzles.
In larger sections, the camera automatically zooms out. The character also has an inventory where items and different kinds of weapons (a pistol, a shotgun, a machine gun, grenades, ...) can be stored. Other pick-ups include key cards, ammo boxes, health packs and different weapon types. Progress is saved automatically and there is also a level selection for the main portions of the game, when they are completed. The storyline is furthered through animated cutscenes and the music is provided by the band New World Revolution.
