Marcus is a modest young man in ancient Roman times that, after a series of chance encounters, sets out in a path to reach higher social status. On the way, he will meet members of royalty and amass enough money and glory to become a respected Roman citizen.
Romance of Rome is a hidden object with some elements from the adventure genre, and a spin-off of the Cradle of Rome series. The plot is developed through comic book screens at the start and end of each chapter. Instead of connecting three tiles of the same type, this time the objective is to find and click on all the items shown on slots at the bottom of the screen, on period locations filled with assorted objects. Some of the slots have a green background, indicating that the object will be stored in the inventory at the right side when collected.
As in most point-and-click adventures, the inventory items have be used on interactive portions of the scenery to complete tasks for other characters and solve puzzles. Some objects are hidden from view, or locked inside containers, and can only be collected after using one of the inventory items on the correct place, like opening a cupboard with its key. There are no penalties for wrong clicks. The hint button shows the position of one of the required items and is unlimited, but takes some time to recharge after use.
The player receives a small sum of money for each item found and task completed. Five gold coins can also be found on each location and added to the funds. The coins have to be spent on the shop screen, where clothing and other accessories have to be purchased to raise Marcus' status and complete the chapter.
