Rückblende, German for "flashback", is an interactive animation created for a student project. The game is entirely in German and takes the player back to a summer house where the protagonist spent many of his holidays. Played from a first-person perspective, the player is able to explore the summer house and the nearby environment using static screens combined with short 3D animated sequences. The gameplay elements are introduced by memories, objects with a white outline that need to be located. When activated through clicking, an animated memory is shown, pencil-drawn in the same white outlines and projected over the environment.
There are no puzzles, just interactive sequences. Throughout the game, no explanation, text or voice-acting is provided. The events are shown and it is left to the player to interpret them along with the stories that took place, guided by eerie soundscapes. By piecing together the different memories, a secret seems to be unravelling.
