Settlement Colossus combines the ideas of several casual genres, uniting the gameplay of resource management and hidden object games in one title. The player assumes the role of an old and ruined Hellenistic Emperor, whose entire civilization was wiped out by a Macedonian invasion years before. After the death of his beloved wife during the war, he turned against the God Helios and blamed the deity for the tragedy that befell his people. Helios cursed the blasphemer to wander through the land and only rest in peace after reconstructing his kingdom to its former glory.
The main game screen shows the entire extension of the settlement territory, showing all the existing city buildings and other places of interest and land features. Locations with available resources display icons of the existing items over them, and the main objective is to gather all the supplies to construct new buildings and generate new items. After selecting one of the locations, a hidden object hunt starts on a separate screen, where the player has to find all the resources listed at the top of the screen. Each object gives a certain amount of one of the resources, with the total number of units collected appearing on a summary window at the end, after filling the basket. The basket can only store a limited amount of objects, but later advances and achievements expand its capacity. The hint button shows the position of one of the required items, but takes some time to recharge after use.
The task button at the top lists all the pending objectives to complete the chapter. As these are accomplished, new buildings and other features become available automatically on the land. Resources are required and consumed when constructing new buildings, researching technology and creating more refined products. At certain points the player has to solve mini-games to progress, where the goal is to manipulate a mechanism of some sort to solve a puzzle. Some are common concepts found on other casual games, like completing a pipeline, moving blocks to create an exit path, and other similar challenges.
The quests are light point-and-click adventure sections initiated by talking to one of the settlers, where the objective is to pick up a series of inventory objects and use them on the appropriate and logical portions of the scenery, to perform required actions and accomplish specific goals. The objects can be dragged and dropped from the inventory to the scene, or combined to create a new tool.
