Shift 2 is a platform game where your only objective is to reach the exit on each level. There are only four ways of moving your character directly. Left, right, jump, and "shift". In the simplest form a level consists of black and white areas, formed as blocks. If a player stands on a black block in the white area and uses the shift ability, the player will invert and rotate the screen, making the black blocks into black air area, and the white area will become solid blocks.
Other gameplay elements include spikes, that will kill the player on impact. There are also unshiftable blocks, where the player cannot shift while standing on them, but will work as walkable blocks for all directions. A special item can change the configuration of these unshiftable blocks, meaning they can turn them into white or black areas or make new unshiftable blocks. The last type of walkable surface is a special locked area which also is unshiftable, but picking up a key will rotate these blocks which may unlock an area, cover some spikes, etc. Finally there are directional arrows which, when walked upon, will rotate the the game world into the direction of the arrow.
