In Soul the player is cast in the role of the soul of a man who has just died. The goal is to find the way to heaven through a number of maze like locations filled with dangers and horror. Touching any of the walls, floors, ceilings or various enemies results in instant death. However, the soul is just sent back to the beginning of the current screen without any punishment. The only means of getting around is to guide the soul using the left thumb stick. There are no attacks or power-ups in the game at all.
The game uses a blend of handdrawn art alongside computer graphics to create the bleak world the soul has to pass through. The enemies in the game are mostly shapeless black creatures with a massive amount of teeth who want nothing more than to devour any glowing soul unfortunate enough to pass by. There are also horror elements which include sudden close ups of screaming deformed dead people to frighten the player, as they show up without warning at certain points throughout the game.
