Star Wars: Battle for the Republic is a turn-based strategy game set in the Star Wars universe. The player can join either the Separatists or the Republic in their struggle for world domination. The game takes place on a grid of squares where the player gets to command his troops. The troops are moved individually across the grid and enemy troops are attacked simply by moving a troop onto another. When battles commence the squared is zoomed in and a short animation is shown. The losing side will then have his troops removed. Troops can normally only move one square at a time. Therefore the player needs to use transportation ships to travel at light speed. This allows the player to move directly to any unoccupied square.

There is also other special units in the game. Battleships increases the movement range of troops and additional strength in combat. Shields add extra defensive strength to troops that are behind although they are not movable. There are also heroes that adds combat modifiers to the troop depending on who they are.

Two campaigns are available, one for the Separatist force and one for the Republic. The Separatist campaign consists of eight missions and by completing it the Republic campaign is unlocked. [source:mobygames]
