Storm: Frontline Nation is a turn-based strategy game set in 2012: The European Union is past and every nation fights on its own. Gameplay is divided into two distinct parts: a strategy map and tactical battles. There are three playing modes to choose from: a story campaign (either played with Germany, France, Russia, UK or US) about the struggle for oil, a free campaign as one of 45 countries and a skirmish mode for single battles. The playing field includes Europe and Northern Africa.
On the strategy map the player has various possibilities to influence the happenings, e.g. with diplomacy, economics (money is the only resource), researching new weapons, constructing buildings (mostly to ensure the supply chain) or upgrading units. Also important is to ensure the nation's loyalty which is influenced by the economic situation and warfare, e.g. the loyalty will fall if a popular country is attacked - but of course there are also measures to influence the people's mind.
However, the focus is on military actions and strategic troop movement. If a battle starts, the game switches to the tactics mode (unless the automatic calculation is chosen): traditional hex-based battles. Here players give attack orders, plan tactical moves or use special attacks, e.g. to lower the enemy's morale. This is one of the various variables which influence the battles, other examples being the terrain or the time of day. However, there is a unit limit of seven for every war party. When larger armies are in battle, one unit has to be defeated before a replacement rolls in.
