FBI agent Claire Ellery wakes up from a terrible nightmare where her partner Tom is murdered by a strange cult, only to pick up a phone call informing that he was found dead outside his apartment, from an apparent suicide. Arriving at the building, she discovers a series of cards with information left behind by the deceased. As she begins to follow the clues and further investigate the circumstances surrounding Tom's demise, more sinister details about a conspiracy involving a shadowy corporation start to surface, leading her to the most strange places to solve the case.
Like its predecessor, Strange Cases: The Lighthouse Mystery is a hidden object game with adventure elements, where the main objective is to collect a series of items and use them to solve all the puzzles found on locations related to the plot. The player assumes the role of the FBI agent, seeing the world from her perspective.
Most items are received after completing hidden object challenges, where all the objects listed on cards at the left side of the screen have to be found and clicked amongst the assorted paraphernalia cluttering the scene. The hint button is a mechanical eye at the top-left corner, showing the position of one of the required objects when activated, but taking some time to recharge after use.
There are three types of cards, each with a different list of objects: the blue card has a list of words, the green card shows a series of silhouettes and the green card displays pictures of segmented objects whose pieces are scattered around the scenery. An icon of a crossed-out eye above a card facing down indicates that some extra step, like opening a container, has to be performed to collect the card.
After completing a card, one of the collected objects is stored in a suitcase inventory at the bottom-left corner, that can be clicked to show its contents inside a series of slots. The items have to be dragged from the inventory and dropped on interactive portions of the location to perform an action or finish a pending task. Mini-games appear inside windows at the center of the screen, where pieces and mechanisms have to be manipulated to solve puzzles. They can be optionally skipped after a few minutes.
