Throne of Olympus is a 2D casual, turn-based battle game built around tile matching. The protagonist is Athena, daughter of Zeus who has chosen her as the successor to the throne. Many of the gods and goddesses disagree with that decision and, therefore, Athena must prove her worthiness by defeating them and their minions in one-on-one battles.
All of the "fighting" is done with magic and is handled in turns so the action waits upon the player's decisions without hurry. The battle arena features a tile-matching grid in the middle flanked on either side by Athena and her current opponent. Moves in each turn can be either the matching of tiles or casting a spell from the bank if it is fully charged.
Matching gems in rows and columns of three or more charge up the spells that are associated with the colors of the gems. Matching pink tiles automatically attacks the opponent. Extra turns can be earned by matching multiples of four or more tiles. A five tile match adds additional damage points to the health bar as well as another turn.
Different spells are introduced gradually and the difficulty of each level increases as the game progresses. There are 12 deities to defeat and each has multiple minions.
